Desktop Earth ist ein Generator für sog. Wallpaper („Bildschirmhintergründe“), der die Welt im Wandel der Jahres- und Tageszeiten darstellt.

Die Funktionsweise ist unter codefromthe70s.org beschrieben:

It will generate a high-resolution, accurate representation of the Earth. The imagery is based on NASA’s Blue Marble Next and Earth’s City Lights. Day and night is accurately represented depending on the Sun’s overhead position (which depends on both the time of day and the day of the year) and both the snow cover and the foliage changes with the seasons.

Es gibt zwei Varianten von Desktop Earth. Neben einer Windows-Software, die regelmäßig das Wallpaper-Bild aktualisiert, gefällt mir vor allem die Variante „Desktop Earth Online“, mit der man einmalig ein Hintergrund-Bild im PNG-Format erzeugen kann:

Vor einiger Zeit bin ich ja schon mal über die beeindruckende „Erde bei Nacht“ gestolpert. Diese Variante finde ich noch besser 😉
